Meet Kelsey

One of my Senior's from 2008 choose a really different path. You see Kelsey's dream of going to art school was stopped short when her parents saw the costs of the school she had chosen. Kelsey didn't give up because Kelsey as her mom says, "never fit the mold". Kelsey started researching how she could full fill her dream of getting a photography degree when she found YWAM or Youth With A Mission. A missionary where students get to receive college credits while they serve the mission.

Kelsey is part of what the media is calling "S" generation or Service generation. This generation is one they are saying are going to have to learn that service will become an intense part of who they are and how they will succeed in their life time.

I emailed Kelsey while she was in India and asked her a few questions.

What made you want to do YWAM?
-I wanted to do YWAM because I wanted a real experience connecting photography and raising awareness about issues that the western world has no idea about. I knew that I could go to college and learn about these things but nothing would give me better training than actually going into the areas that are being affected and learning hands on there.

How much did you need to raise?
-For YWAM overall including air fare and everything I needed to raise about 8000 dollars but through what I had saved and support from my family I had it pretty much covered but for the book that we're making as a whole we need about 25,000 euros to make it happen, God's going to provide in sweet ways.

How long are you committed to them?
-I'm committed to YWAM for these seven months (September to March) then I'm planning on staying until at least May to help see this book come together and contribute in whatever ways I can. Then who knows, maybe I'll be back after that long term!

What project you are working on?
- The project we're working on right now is a book to raise awareness and educate the Western world about extreme poverty. We're split into two teams, one in India and one in Ethiopia and we're going into these areas affected by extreme poverty, getting to know the people, getting their story, taking photographs, putting it all into book form. Then when we get back to Germany we'll be working out more of the logistic type things then hopefully going on a tour with our photos and the book to reach even more people then who knows what from there!
